Welcome Back, Jennifer Kloetzel!
The Richmond Philharmonic is thrilled to welcome back acclaimed cellist Jennifer Kloetzel for our upcoming concert - Reveling in Ravel: A French Evolution - on Sunday, May 4, 2025, at 4:00 PM!
Ms. Kloetzel will take center stage performing two masterpieces by renowned French composers Gabriel Fauré and Camille Saint-Saëns, both pivotal figures in shaping the rich French musical tradition.
Here are some fascinating notes about the works you'll hear:
Fauré’s Élégie for Cello and Orchestra
Originally composed as the slow movement of an unfinished cello sonata, the Élégie was first written for cello and piano. Fauré later arranged it for orchestra, and the legendary Pablo Casals gave the premiere performance in 1901, with Fauré himself conducting.Saint-Saëns’ Cello Concerto No. 1
Written when Saint-Saëns was just 37 years old, this concerto is considered by many, including Shostakovich and Rachmaninoff, to be one of the greatest cello concertos ever composed. Uniquely, Saint-Saëns crafted it as one continuous movement, breaking away from the traditional three-movement concerto form.
Join us early at 3:00 PM for a special pre-concert chat featuring Jennifer Kloetzel, Maestro Peter Wilson, and VPM’s Mike Goldberg.
