The Philharmonic, one of a handful of member-run orchestras in America, has been presenting concerts to Richmond audiences for more than 35 years.
The orchestra was organized in 1972 by Milton Cherry, professor of music at Virginia Commonwealth University, and Cornelia Henderson, violinist, concert-mistress and first president, as The Richmond Community Symphony Orchestra which was shortened to The Richmond Community Orchestra when the organization incorporated. In 1989 the name was officially changed to the Richmond Philharmonic, Inc.
The orchestra season consists of four or five concerts, typically performed between late October and mid-June, in the auditorium of J.R. Tucker High School, 2910 Parham Road in Henrico County and other locations around town. The Philharmonic also performs at other venues around Richmond and Central Virginia from time to time during the concert season.
The orchestra is managed by officers elected at the Annual Meeting of the Corporation. The officers comprise the Board of Directors who are charged with the responsibility of managing and directing the affairs of the organization. Music Directors are auditioned by members of the Corporation and chosen by vote of the membership.
