Interesting Facts About This Program
- Ruslan and Lyudmila is an opera based on the 1820 poem of the same name by Alexander Pushkin. It has been performed over 700 times in 9 different productions in the past 165 at the Bolshoi Kamennit Teatr, where it premiered in 1842.
- Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 is one of his most popular pieces. Prior to writing it, he suffered from clinical depression. The piece is dedicated to the physician who helped restore his confidence - Nikolai Dahl.
- Suite from "The Firebird" is an orchestral suite based on Stravinsky's ballet of the same name. The music was used in Disney's Fantasia 2000 where it tells the story of the Spring Sprite and her companion, an elk.
